“We learn best by making things; we all learn in different ways at different speeds; we are motivated by real work; and at the heart of learning is literacy.”
-David Grant, King Middle School, Portland, ME

In Expeditionary Learning schools, literacy is an integral part of every learning expedition. The excitement of learning expeditions motivates students to read; in turn, the explicit teaching of reading comprehension deepens students understanding of the content. In K-12 classrooms, EL teachers explicitly teach decoding, comprehension and writing skills. Students do their best writing when they care about the topic, purpose and their audience. Learning expeditions offer compelling reasons for practicing and applying effective literacy strategies through projects that require reading, research, writing, and debating and presentation skills.
