We can help you engage parents and make use of community resources: examples from EL schools
• At a K-8 School in Washington, DC, on a November day, parents, friends and teachers browse the tables of the 7th grade investment fair, a hands-on lesson in what it's like to be a business person and artisan. "The marketplace is part of the year-long study of Latin American culture and its influence on US culture," explains the teacher. "I think its' real life," says the mother of a 7th grader. Real life it is. Mixed in with the marketing is math. One 7th grader adds up the cost of two Turkish deserts at Tony's carryout: $3.50. Then he calculates what a full tray would cost. The principal munches some food and says approvingly, "This is interdisciplinary."
