We can help you... develop new schools
Charter Schools
Over one quarter of the schools in our Expeditionary Learning network are charter schools. Our staff is experienced in supporting the start-up of charter schools and can help you explore the possibilities of starting a school in your area. Small High Schools
With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other sources, Expeditionary Learning is in the process of starting small Expeditionary Learning high schools across the country. Expeditionary Learning's regional staff work with district and/or charter officials to plan these schools from the outset including selecting the principal and faculty; recruiting students to ensure diversity; determining the schedule and calendar; setting the curriculum scope and sequence; and developing a code of conduct. These schools also receive a higher level of technical assistance and on- and off-site professional development.
“One of the greatest challenges of starting a new school is establishing a strong culture and a sense of community. In our third year, we noticed a deep sense of pride in our students. Traditions have been established, among them an expectation that members of this community respect one another and the school.” -Meg Campbell, head, Codman Academy Charter School
Expeditionary Learning is in the business of starting new schools as well as working to improve existing schools. Approximately one quarter of the schools we work with are charter schools, and we have been part of the process of starting many of them. And recently, Expeditionary Learning began a five-year effort to start 20 new high schools across the country with the support of a grant of $12.6 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The first two of these schools, one in Denver and one in New York city, opened in September, 2004. We have experience in starting schools and would be pleased to speak with you.
